If it was you wouldn’t be here reading an article about getting your website on the first page now would you.
The biggest problem that I see is that the person that runs the website actually has no idea what terms it needs to be on the front page of Google in the first place. The owner of the “Acme Widget Company” types widgets into Google search and they are no where to be found. This is a common problem. Same thing can happen if they actually type in “Acme Widget Company”.
The issue is they shouldn’t even be worrying about those terms. People are looking for “Blue widgets” , “Red Widgets” etc. Of course we can break that down even further. “Waterproof blue widgets” is something the end user would probably type in or even speak using Siri or some other search assistant. Sometimes my kitten even likes to search. The point is you have no idea who and what the end user is using for search.
Do You Know What Search Terms Your Competition Is Ranking For?
One of the first things I do when I am either starting a niche website or working for a client I am looking at their top 5 competitors to see what terms they are ranking for. Odds are they have already done some research on the topic so might as well see what they are doing and beat them at their own game.
Within a few minutes of using search and tracking rankings I can see their weakness and make better web pages based off of that and even make it better than their original articles. We also take that content and run it into social media in evergreen form and repeat it every once in a while to pick up new engaged followers and fans.
Think About How You Search!
Odds are you are a good candidate about how people search. Go to Google and start typing in the search engine. The suggested or even the history will show you how detailed your searches are.
This past week I have been doing research for a client in the RV space. Of course I went and checked out all the major brands. Using some software I can tell all of the keywords they are ranking for and what websites are giving them a link back. For my client we can go in and contact those websites and get a link back to their site instead. We also found out who the influential bloggers are in the space and found some places to get easy low hanging fruit links.
While doing some research I also saw that by age bracket people search different things. You would think in the rv camping space the searches would be.
- Camper
- Cheap Camper
- Towable Camper
- Buy an RV
- RV’s on Craiglist
Thats not how or what they are searching though. The list looks more like this.
- How to Finance an RV
- How Much is Insurance On An RV
- Can You Buy an RV With NO Sales Tax
- Best State To Buy AN RV
- How Much Does IT Cost To Store An RV
- Do You Need A special License To Drive An RV
- Where is The Best Place To Take An RV on Vacation
As you can see everything is in much more detail. Your website needs to have this content and answers to these more in detail questions. If you look at the last search the end user is already thinking about where they are going on vacation. In their mind they already bought the RV.
Another thing to think about especially in the RV space is people are searching for upgrades so you have to have those types of terms in your web copy as well.
- How Do You Install a bigger black water tank?
- How much insurance should my new RV have?
- Do you travel with the fresh water tank full?
- What size truck do I need to pull a 28 foot travel trailer?
- Do I need to Upgrade my Solar Panels?
- What size generator do I need to run my air conditioners all night?
These are just some questions that your returning customers would have. You have to make sure you have the appropriate content for their searches also.
